Types of essay

In the literary tradition, you will find many types of essays on various compositions that cover different topics. Four types of essays can be distinguished:

  • philosophical essay
  • scientific essay
  • journalistic essay
  • critical essay – dedicated to art

When you browse the pages of the history of literature, you will also encounter many works that have essayistic character, but are not included in the essays. Many novels can have a shaped narrative in this way. The presence of fiction and too large size are the main reasons for not including them in essays. Despite its underdetermination, this species has several important features:

Features:

  • Poetry

Let’s start with the key question and the essence of the essay. This is not a literary genre, neither journalistic nor utilitarian. Due to its vague position, the essay is characterized by a literary shape of language in which the poetic (aesthetic) function plays a significant role, which should be understood as artistic, elaborate shape of expression.

Srocessivity

The best answers to such questions refer to the name. According to the French term essayer, this is an attempt, an attempt to get to the bottom of things, to the truth. Thus, the essay is a process of reaching a point, and thus it remains infinite, open, just like the discussion in which it participates. It does not have to end with a summary, a conclusion. However, it is worth trying and get some interesting punch line here.

Subject

However, this is not a statement representing society, a group of people, but one person – the author. And this is the strength of this species. This “I” is the axis, the center conditioning the consistency of expression. The essayist is not obliged to objectivism, on the contrary, he is expected to take an individual approach to the subject of the statement, and therefore unheard of by others. This does not mean, however, that the essay is shallow. His wealth does not result from an objective presentation of things, but from the diversity of perspectives and associations, but above all from the exploration of this essayistic “I”.

Composition

Absolutely any, but in no way chaotic! It can be loose, it can be fragmentary, but it can not be chaotic. On the contrary, it should be a real masterpiece showing the author’s masterful artistry.

It allows the use of: associations of thoughts, images, quotes, paradoxes, aphorisms, digressions, exemplations, retrospections and all other stylistic measures that bring the essay closer to the poetic prose. Remember, however, that the essay does not introduce literary fiction.

Rules of writing:

  • enjoy the richness of stylistic lines and rhetorical figures
  • take care of the unconventional nature (associations, material selection, topic)
  • be brief and clear in thinking
  • think about the structure of the essay

Calculations must not be used

avoid the auto thematic phrases (eg at the beginning, in the end, now I will go to …, then I will discuss …)

take advantage of the fact that in the essay practically all tricks are allowed
